A Tale of Two Trees

via Daily Prompt: Meander

Once upon a time, were two trees…neighbours… and were quite a contrast to each other in the diverse Amazonian forests, home to many a myriad collection of spectacular creatures… from the tiny ants and bugs to the huge giant Anacondas…

Quite a sight was these trees… One hefty and had an empowering presence…Its trunk was gigantic, for even an Anaconda to coil around… It’s trunk and branches hosted several predators…

Its neighbour and companion, however, was lean and in no way mean… Monkeys used to use its trunk as a launching pole to jump around onto higher terrain, something which the tree facilitated with ease…

Surprisingly the 2 trees found out several common branches of philosophy to discuss on… and discuss did they, with enthusiasm…very often literally drilling down to the root of the matter…

And differ they did in many areas, with attitude being the most prominent…For the hefty tree was of the opinion that size did matter… for with size came power and authority… after all, he was home to many powerful predators, who had to rely on Him for shelter…The meek often found themselves dead on his powerful branches…

And often he would remind his thin wired friend… you are knowledgeable no doubt… but you also need to be strong…Just look at your fate today… only monkeys monkey around on you…they don’t respect you… and you continue to bend around for them… It’s indeed a disgrace…

The Thin tree just tried explaining his stance… that his joy is in being flexible, that’s his source of happiness…but the mighty tree just passed this off as pacifism…A philosophy that the lean tree had to resort to, an excuse… a cover-up for his rather pathetic powerless frame…The thin one would simply smile at these barbs he received…Life continued as always in the mighty Amazon…nothing much changed, though change was the only constant… However this time around…

The unseasonal storm brewing had made many animals restless…their natural rhythm seemed off balance… They could sense something amiss…this kind of a storm build up…with an impenetrable blanket of cloud cover and gusty winds were never experienced by even the older trees in the vicinity… It was as if… there was no day… only night… with continued spells of thunderous rain and wind all through…The winds were in fact only warming up…with a cold-blooded intent to uproot anyone coming in its way…The 2 friends were right on its path…

As the first gust hit them hard, the hefty tree taunted the wind.. come-on try harder…is this all that you have got… I have got my roots deep… and bend I will NOT!! I have withered and weathered many a jerk like you before as well…

The thin wired tree already bruised and shaken warned his friend… lie low my friend… I too have seen many a storm… but this one is different… lie low my friend, lie low and meander with the Wind God… He seems furiously angry this time around… I can sense it…

Oh, shut up will you… and you pray that you survive… for you are already bruised and battered… and you advice me!!! I will meet this rogue head-on, resist and slap him with all my strength…The gusts were, however, gaining momentum…preparing for the final assault…

Other trees whom Mr Hefty considered strong lay uprooted by the gusty onslaught… He was besieged by doubt… Others have fallen… What if I were too!!!

He immediately suppressed this negative voice and mustered all his strength taking the stormy blasts head on… His roots firmly entrenched deep in the ground suddenly seemed weak and soft…Hesitation seemed to have found its way in every fibre of his being…He was feeling lighter, the ground beneath his feet was giving away…

From the corner of his eye, he saw his thin wired tree friend stooping so low, that he had practically become horizontal…hanging on still…

Goodbye, my friend was the last words he cried out before crashing to the ground with such a might…The area around seemed to shriek with chaos and grief never witnessed until that day… It was probably the darkest night in what was supposed to be a bright day!!! The Amazon too moaned the loss of its strongest tree…

The storm too subsided… its objective seemed met…eerily fulfilled… The thin wired tree bruised and battered looked around with moist eyes at his fallen colleague…It could however grievingly sense that change was around the corner!!!
